⭐ How to cut driving costs with Uber, Bolt and Freenow? A complete guide for drivers
Driving costs are one of the main reasons why app drivers earn less than they should. Most drivers lose 300 – 800 zł a month simply because they do not know how to optimise fuel, taxes, their choice of fleet partner or their car.
This guide shows the most effective ways to cut costs, based on data from real drivers, fleet experience and market analysis.
Choosing a fleet partner can change your earnings by as much as 3000 zł a year. Most drivers lose money not on fuel, but on commissions, hidden fees and badly settled VAT.
Choosing a car - the most important decision for your costs
For Uber, Bolt and Freenow drivers, the real fuel and servicing costs depend less on the model and 70% on the engine under the bonnet.
1. Hybrid + LPG
The cheapest way to drive in the industry.
Fuel costs: 30 – 40 zł a day.
Why?
driving on LPG is the cheapest,
the hybrid system helps with fuel consumption in the city,
low failure rate,
no turbo and no DPF,
ideal for city driving.
- real LPG consumption with a modern hybrid is 5.5 l / 100 km
2. MPI petrol + LPG
If a driver does not have the budget for a hybrid, this is the second-best option.
Advantages:
very low servicing costs,
simple engine design,
works very well with LPG,
consumption of 8-10 litres of gas.
3. LPG, LPG, LPG
If a hybrid is out of the question, a naturally aspirated engine is out of the question and you are left with some other petrol engine, it is worth (really worth) investing in an LPG system. When you start working as a taxi driver, you start using your car far more intensively than before. Even if you only drive part-time, 4-6 hours a week, think about how many kilometres that adds up to. Driving an extra 6 hours is like driving from Silesia to the seaside once a week. LPG is always a cost-effective option for taxi work.
4. Diesel – only in exceptional cases
A diesel only pays off when a driver does a lot of trips outside the city: airports, intercity transfers, long distances. In practice, however, on the Uber, Bolt and Freenow apps you cannot choose only those rides, and there are far fewer of them anyway.
A diesel in the city is not a recommended solution, because of:
the turbo,
the DPF,
the injectors,
potentially high repair costs,
- high fuel consumption in city driving.
Nevertheless, in every case, driving your own car (even a diesel) always works out better than driving a rented one – the costs are almost always lower.
How much do you spend on fuel a week? If it is more than 300 - 400 zł, you probably have an inefficient car or the wrong driving habits.
VAT and expense invoices – real savings for drivers
Why is VAT the most important element in cutting costs?
Every driver can potentially deduct 50% of the VAT on expense invoices, i.e. for:
fuel,
servicing,
tyres,
parts,
car equipment,
car washes,
work-related expenses.
Example:
A 200 zł gross fuel invoice → VAT of 37 zł → you save 18.50 zł. These are small amounts, but over a month they can often add up to savings of several hundred złoty.
With most partners, surplus VAT is lost or only partly settled. At Ramnext VAT is settled in full, and the balance never disappears.
8.5% flat-rate tax – the simplest and often the cheapest form of taxation
Most drivers should use the flat-rate tax.
Tax cost:
Income of 4000 zł → only 340 zł in tax.
It is simple, predictable and cost-effective for drivers. At Ramnext the 8.5% flat-rate tax is the norm, even though on the market it is not necessarily so.
How to refuel so that you pay less?
Simple tricks that really reduce fuel consumption:
always refuel at the same stations (discounts, rebates, cashback),
drive smoothly – aggressive starts increase consumption by 10-20%,
do not sit stationary with the air conditioning running non-stop,
avoid driving only around the app’s “red” zones – a multiplier 5 km away from you does not mean it will still be there when you arrive,
check your tyre pressure (under-inflated tyres mean a real +10% in fuel consumption).
Tyre pressure that is 0.5 bar too low can increase fuel consumption by as much as 8-12%. It is one of the costs drivers most often ignore.
Fleet partner – the biggest difference in earnings
For many drivers this comes as a surprise, but a partner may be taking more than it declares.
A suboptimal partner:
50 zł a week,
1% of gross turnover,
commissions hidden in the payout,
problems with settling VAT from invoices, or no VAT settlement at all,
- other hidden costs,
- undue ZUS contributions charged several times
Ramnext:
a fixed commission of 45 zł,
0% of turnover,
correct and complete VAT settlement,
invoice settlement,
- 8.5% flat-rate tax.
The result:
The difference can be as much as 2000 – 4000 zł a year.
You can save the most not on fuel, but on your partner. The difference between 0% and 1% commission can be as much as 150 zł a week.
Summary
Cutting your driving costs with Uber, Bolt and Freenow comes down to simple steps:
choosing the right car,
driving on LPG,
deducting VAT,
the flat-rate tax,
the right fleet partner,
avoiding drivers’ most common mistakes.
For most drivers, changing their habits brings 300 – 600 zł of savings a month, and together with switching partner as much as 1000 zł a month.
